Within what we commonly refer to as the ‘Western world’ there exists the concept of duality. We are encouraged to understand the world through a belief in two opposing forces that are in constant conflict with each other. Consequently, we are taught to use the ‘eyes’ of heaven or of hell to understand our thoughts and actions. However, within Taoist philosophy the idea of duality is a little more refined. Instead of two opposing forces locked in an eternal power struggle, the universe is instead a perfect whole in which all opposites are not only inseparable, but actually necessary. In order for ‘good’ to exist there must also be ‘evil.’ In order to find happiness, we must also experience what it is to be sad.
Yin and Yang symbolise the symbiotic relationship that exists and flows through our lives as a consequence of these dual forces. The seasons, the weather, the food that we eat and how we eat it, and the cycle from day into night are all an expression of these two forces. It is for this reason that in all things there exists the possibility of finding a balance, and for this reason there is never one without the other. By understanding this nature, we can begin to understand the cycles and patterns that exist within everything. We will still fall ill but we can also heal. We can experience moments of pure joy next to moments of total despair. However, sooner or later every aspect of the life we live will rebalance and find harmony within itself. The trick is to stay grounded, to recognise the signs that there is a chance of rain and to recognise that we too must seek to balance every aspect of who we are.
Alongside Yin and Yang exists the philosophy of Heaven, Earth, and Mankind. We as humans exist between the two realms of Heaven (Yang) and Earth (Yin) and are therefore influenced by both. Our path through life is therefore an expression of our connection with these energies. There are times when our connection is greater with one energy than with the other. But, if we can find a way to maintain a healthy bond with both then we will experience centeredness, the result of which is a peaceful mind, a healthy body, and a constantly evolving spirit. For us humans, the way and the challenge is to stand with our feet firmly on the earth grounded in the moment, whilst extending head towards the heavens.
So, as you continue on your daily adventures, remember to breathe deeply. Let the energies resonating from Heaven and Earth be drawn into your body. And know that in essence you are an expression of Heaven and Earth, and that Heaven and Earth is an expression of you. Stay grounded in the earth, find your heaven and walk with stillness!
"Mankind depends on the laws of Earth,Earth depends on the laws of Heaven,Heaven depends on the laws of Tao, But Tao depends on itself alone, supremely free, self-so, it rests in its own nature.”
Tao Te Ching, by Lao Tzu
